First Game at Kaufmann

The next two days, we will be in Kansas City Missouri watching the Royals take on the Chicago WhiteSox. In our first game we sat in the upper deck directly behind home plate.

We were pretty high up, but I especially enjoyed this view because we had a view of everything that was going on. We were also staring directly at the large jumbo-tron, and as the game progressed this proved to be very important. It seems like at every free moment, there was something going on with the scoreboard. They promotions ranged from the more common ones like the kiss cam, but they also continued to get more creative with things like the best hair cam. As a whole, it was a beautiful and very family friendly environment. Everyone in the stands was friendly, and genuinely seemed interested in what was going on, whether that was the game or who had the best hair. We were also lucky to have another Coe College Alumni and visitor Jordan Lord. He is a big Royals fan, and was able to give us a scouting report of everything that was going on with the team!

On the baseball side of things, It seemed like from the very beginning that the Royals were enjoying playing at home, and  going to dominate the whole game. The Royals scored 5 runs of off Scott Carroll in the bottom of the first inning. Unfortunately for Carroll, the fact that he grew up in Kansas City didn't seem to work in his favor, as he never recovered after the first inning and lasted less than 5 innings.
Pitching for the Royals was Jason Vargas, and he too had a rough game, giving up 3 home runs before exiting before 5 full innings as well. As the game progressed, the Royals hot offense began to stagnate down the stretch, while the White Sox hitters who had started off cold were able to get some momentum, and ended up winning in the 9th off of a Paul Konerko (how old is he now?) Go ahead 2 run shot. Final score 7-6 White Sox.
Even though the game started off slow, and it looked like it was going to be a blowout, this was without a doubt the most exciting baseball game we have attended yet! I hope there is this much action in the others, and that maybe we can see some better starting pitching!!
Until the Next Adventure,
Ryan Rey
