The time had finally come, it was time to start our May term adventure! I couldn't believe it was actually here! I have been anticipating this trip since November of last year, I thought this day would never come. My excitement last night was at an all time high! We pulled into downtown Minneapolis for our first MLB game of the trip; the Minnesota Twins were facing the Boston Red Sox. I gazed out the window and off to the left and I saw Target Field quickly approaching, it was really happening!
We found a place in the crowded parking lots of downtown Minneapolis to park our gigantic 15-passenger van and we made the five-block jaunt to Target Field. I love experiencing big cities, there’s just something about looking up at the sky and seeing buildings that stand hundreds of feet over your head that kind of puts the world into perspective. Our walk went by quickly and we made our way to the gates of the stadium.
We walked through the huge metal detectors placed at the entrance of every gate and we received our free All-Star Game tote bag. Our class has decided that whenever possible, we are going to take advantage of the various promotions that the parks offer; we thought that our new tote bags would be great for holding the rest of our free souvenirs from the trip! We were directed to our seats and we took advantage of the unlimited $1 hot dogs offered that evening. Unfortunately, I don’t eat hot dogs, so I dropped an obscene amount of money on some mediocre nachos.
Once we were settled and stuffed full of hot dogs, we were free to explore the stadium as we wished. Some of our class members spent time behind the dug out, watching batting practice and snapping some action shots. Other class members wandered the concourse and spotted some awesome, and pricey, Twins apparel. We heard the announcement for the opening pitch and we quickly made our way back to our seats.
Unfortunately, the weather in Minneapolis for our 7:10 pm game was rather chilly. The temperature at first pitch was standing in the low 50’s and by the time the game was over, we were looking at temperatures in the lower 40’s accompanied by howling winds, making it seem even colder. I didn’t think it was possible to be so cold at a baseball game in May, but I was definitely wrong! The stands at Target Field were pretty bare, but our class was determined to make the best out of our first game together.
The Twins fell short to the Red Sox, leading to an even more docile atmosphere in the stadium. David Ortiz was released from the Twins in 2002 and joined the Red Sox the following year. Whenever Ortiz faces his former team, he makes sure to give them hell, and that is exactly what he did last evening. Ortiz managed two home runs in the game with an additional three runs scored, leading the Red Sox to their 9-4 victory over the Twins. The Twins starting pitcher, Correia, struggled from the beginning, giving up two runs in the first inning. With runs scoring in six of the nine innings, the Red Sox were definitely playing to win. The Twins put up a fight in the bottom of the ninth by scoring two additional runs, but still, they were no match for the Red Sox. The game ended around 10:00 pm and we made our way back to our hotel to rest up for our 4:00 am wake up call the next day to begin our next journey to Miller Stadium in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Overall, our first MLB game was a success, and I can't wait to experience many more!
Until next time -
