On the Road Again..Kansas City Bound!

Our group arrived to the Writing Center this morning bright eyed and bushy tailed. We loaded the van with our 3 weeks worth of luggage and buckled in for the first leg of our West coast journey. We departed from Coe College at 9:05 this morning to make our way towards Kansas City, Missouri. Being from the greater Kansas City area, I was very excited for this portion of our trip. I grew up spending my summers in Kauffman Stadium and I was looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere as an adult!

Dr. Bob allowed each of us to make our own ‘mix tape’ c.d. to bring on the trip, however, only two of the class members followed through on that (props Hailley and Brendan). We started the trip off with Brendan’s musical selection. There was a lot of Queen involved, and even more of Brendan lip-syncing to every song on the album. The morning’s journey was full of laughs and priceless moments - including Dr. Bob singing at the top of his lungs. After Brendan’s playlist finished, we popped in Hailley’s c.d. that provided a large variety of great music, including a finale of ‘Closing Time’ by SemiSonic.

Around noon, our van pulled over at a rest stop right outside out of Missouri. We unloaded the back of the van, pulled out our mini-fridge and prepared a class picnic; complete with build-your-own sandwiches, and Cool Ranch Doritos. The wind was rather fierce this afternoon, so we worked really hard to keep all of our food on our plates. Our class did get to share a good laugh as we watched Ryan R. chase down his runaway plate across the parking lot. We finished up our meal by stuffing ourselves with Oreos and we were ready to hit the road again.

Some of our classmates settled in for a post-lunch nap, while others of us shared stories with Dr. Bob or watched movies on our computers. As we approached Kansas City, I started becoming more and more excited for the upcoming two days. We passed Bethany, then Kearney, and finally Liberty; Kansas City was just a few miles away! We passed the Quick Trip that my family always stops at when we come into town, and suddenly I became overwhelmed by the comforting feeling of being home. This was the city in which some of my favorite memories occurred, and it felt so good to be back.

We checked into our hotel around 3:15 pm in Independence, MO and took a quick break from the long morning of traveling. Around 5 o’clock we walked across the street to bd’s Mongolian Grill and sat down to a delicious meal. After a quick dinner, it was time to head to Kauffman Stadium to watch the Royals face the Chicago White Sox. Overall, today was a great day! I am looking forward to our many adventures ahead.

Until Next Time –

Kaylie

  1. I can think of no one more qualified to chase a plate across a parking lot than Ryan.
